Siemens Simatic S5 AS511 ID:18

Interface Description

The IGSS32 Siemens Simatic AS511 communication interface offers connection to Simatic S5 Series of PLCs equipped directly on the CPU port. AS511 is a proprietary Siemens protocol which is primarily used for programming Siemens S5 system. The protocol can however also be used for exchanging data with SCADA systems such as IGSS. The bandwidth and the functions of the protocol limited compared to other Siemens protocols. This means that this driver should only be used for relatively small applications – larger application should use either 3964R/RK512, SINEC L2 or SINEC H1 networks.

The AS511 protocol uses a standard serial RS-232C port in the PC and a Siemens PG cable to connect directly to the PLC programming port. This makes it an easy to use and cheap driver because it doesn’t need any CP board in the PLC and hence doesn’t need any setup either.

AS511 is a Siemens proprietary non-documented protocol. This means that it might not work with all Simatic S5 CPU types. Please check the list of tested CPU types below.

The IGSS32 system polls the PLC equipment cyclically according to one of four user-defined time intervals. The time intervals are configurable from 100 milliseconds to 999 seconds. The system automatically groups process data in data blocks – thus fully exploiting the the communication link in relation to the present configuration.
