Interface Description

IGSS32 offers an interface for connection to SINEC L2 (PROFIBUS) networks using the FDL Protocol layer. SINEC L2 networks are based on industri standard PROFIBUS specifications which is used an a large number of industial applications. SINEC L2 networks are flexible and relatively easy to use yet offering fast and relaiable communication.

The communication driver uses the FDL protocol layer of the SINEC L2 bus specification to exchange data with Siemens (or other) PLCs connected to the SINEC L2 bus. Since the FDL protocol does not support FETCH and WRITE commands a special protocol has been applied on top of the FDL protocol. This protocol enables the PC to make FETCH and WRITE commands to connected PLC. The PLCs must have a function block installed which is handling this protocol. Function blocks for this purpose for Simatic S5 and Simatic S7 systems are available from Siemens A/S Denmark.

The PC has to be connected to the SINEC L2 network using a CP board which is supported by either SoftNet/S7, CP5412-A2 or compatible interface boards.

The IGSS32 system polls the PLC equipment cyclically according to one of four user-defined time intervals. The time intervals are configurable from 100 milliseconds to 999 seconds. The system automatically groups process data in data blocks - thus fully exploiting the the communication link in relation to the present configuration.

It is possible to apply event-oriented communication. Then the PLC equipment has control over when and which data to send to the IGSS32 system. In this way the use of available communication bandwidth can be optimised.
